Sterling has been quietly outrunning the yen. GBP/JPY has climbed from 210.18 on 26 October to around 212.00 on Tuesday, a two-month high, with the Bank of England deciding on Thursday. A hike to 4.00% was almost fully priced after UK inflation jumped, investinglive noted. Our AUD/JPY forecast showed similar yen weakness, so let’s check the pound’s chart.

What the Chart Shows

The dark line represents the path that the market followed. It started off at 210.18 on 26 October, then moved slightly higher to 210.30 the following day. When the Bank of Japan decided to keep interest rates steady on 30 October, it reached 210.80. Finally, it hit 212.00. The red dashed line represents the two-month high and the first major obstacle. Below, there’s the 210.00 pivot, which acts as a floor for prices. Also below, there’s a shaded area (from 208.00 to 210.00), representing the September pivot, which serves as a safety net. To the upside, 215.00 is a significant round number that could potentially act as a target for traders. Our USD/JPY analysis argued the BoJ is tightening slowly.

The Yen Puzzle

Tradingpedia reported that the BoJ voted 8-1 to hold the rate at 1.25% on October 30; however, Hajime Takata was in favour of raising it to 1.50%. Additionally, Commerzbank predicts that there is an 80% chance for a rate hike in December. Japan’s Finance Minister has also expressed concern over disorderly currency movements; therefore, yen rallies are likely to occur unexpectedly.

Sterling has its own weak spots, as our GBP/USD forecast explained.

Sterling’s Side

In the UK, inflation is 3.5%, and the 28 October Budget may add around £20bn of investment over five years, FXStreet via TMGM reported. Governor Ueda says underlying Japanese inflation is near 2%, so the BoJ isn’t in a hurry. That rate gap favours sterling, but a hawkish BoJ would narrow it. The position-sizing tips in our smart forex setups article help here. Remember that if you trade this pair, it typically has a high degree of correlation to global risk sentiment. For instance, when global stock markets experience volatility, traders will commonly seek refuge in the Japanese yen (JPY), driving down GBP/JPY regardless of whether the fundamentals of the United Kingdom are strong.

A Practical Game Plan

The GBP/JPY cross moves very fast. For this reason, you need to pay attention to the value of each pip. It’s not uncommon to see a move of 100 pips on central bank announcement days. Therefore, you should decide how much money you are willing to lose per day, and use that as the basis for sizing your trades. There are many traders who will wait for the Bank of England to release its decision, and then trade the reaction rather than the anticipation, particularly if a rate hike is already factored into the market. If the British Pound closes above 212.00, then a possible pull-back to this area could provide an excellent opportunity to enter the market. Conversely, if it does not close above 212.00, then 210.00 is the key level to monitor. Be aware of risks associated with trading over weekends and around comments made by Japanese government officials, as these types of events may cause the trend to reverse quickly due to the possibility of intervention. Lastly, do not adjust your stop-loss order farther away from the price.

Three Scenarios

Bullish: a daily close above 212.00 targets 215.00.

Bearish: a close below 210.00 aims for 208.00.

Neutral: a 210 to 212 range into the BoE.

The Bank of England’s decision on Thursday and its subsequent guidance established the immediate environment for the Pound. Over the long-term, the Bank of Japan’s gradual move towards raising interest rates represents the primary threat to the Pound, while Takata’s dissent from the majority vote against raising rates in July, as indicated by the BOJ’s official statement, further illustrates this trend. Will Sterling exceed 212.00 or fall below 210? Ensure that you have set reasonable stop levels as sudden moves in the Yen can occur.
