- Rising US bond yields are putting pressure on the prices of precious metals, leaving silver prices trading below the $64 benchmark.
Current Setup
Bias: short-term bias is cautious-to-bearish below $67
Silver price is under pressure this Thursday as US bond yields rise to their highest levels in nearly 20 years. The white metal is currently trading around $63.36/oz, after a sharp reversal from above $67.50 earlier in the week.
The immediate backdrop is the challenge posed by a strengthening US Dollar, buoyed by rising yields and increasing safe-haven demand, and by Middle East conflict spreading westward to the Saudi oil shipping conduits. Markets are also pricing in a higher-for-longer Fed stance, with Goldman Sachs leading several institutional voices forecasting an October Fed rate hike.
Presently, the $64 support zone is deemed critical, as a break below it weakens the short-term structure materially.
Silver Price: Current Macro Drivers
1. Hawkish Fed expectations
The Fed raised rates in its 16 September 2026 meeting to 3.75%–4.00% last week and expectations point to further tightening in October. Silver prices remain under short-term pressure from higher Treasury yields and a stronger dollar, as these raise the opportunity cost of holding precious metals which are typically non-yielding. This is the primary driver of silver price in the short term.
2. Industrial Demand: Still Relevant
Unlike gold, silver is considered a defensive play because of its industrial demand component. The boost in AI infrastructure development, electronics, solar, and green-energy electrification has provided a structural demand narrative for silver. This cushions whatever negative fundamentals arise from geopolitics or rising US bond yields.
3. Geopolitical Risk
Higher oil prices from the geopolitical risk premium have a two-way impact. On one hand, it raises inflation expectations and reinforces the tighter Fed policy argument, which is negative for silver. On the other hand, renewed geopolitical stress can generate safe-haven demand for gold and, by extension, silver.
Silver Price: Forecast Scenarios
Base case→ Consolidation: The $64.00–$67.00 price area appears to be the current consolidation zone, reflecting traders trying to balance higher US bond yields against industrial and geopolitically-induced flight to safety.
Bull case→ The $70 mark beckons if the bull case scenario leads to a break of $67. This is dependent on the unwinding of the oil shock risk premium and a rotation to industrial metals from risk-associated demand.
Bear case: Depression of Chinese demand takes away the defensive status of silver and exposes it to rising bond yields. Also, rising oil prices make industrial production more expensive and ultimately reduce demand. This scenario could see silver trading below $64, which puts $62 in focus.
Technical Outlook
Price is currently range-bound between 67.40 and 62.54.
A breakdown of the latter exposes downside targets at 61/07 and 56.91 (late July lows). The 17 July low at 54.68 is the next available target on a deeper retracement.

On the flip side, a break of 67.40 exposes the 28 August 2026 high at 70.73. Beyond this point, 77.49 is the additional target to the north.
