TESLA Share Price: Muted Response to the Roadster’s Unveiling

Current setup

The Tesla share price rose after the company unveiled its long-delayed next-generation Roadster. The “flying car” used SpaceX’s thrusters to enable a few airborne maneuvers during its demonstration. The event was at best, an attention-grabbing headline that produced some demand for the stock on Friday 16 October.

TSLA closed 0.47% higher on Friday as the market remains unsure of the product’s commercial implications. Commercial production and deployment are still two years away, and CEO Elon Musk has previously said the Roadster will not materially impact the company’s revenues near term.

The key question is whether Tesla’s third-quarter earnings, due for release on 21 October, can build on the slight momentum from the Roadster’s unveiling. The prototype vehicle’s demonstration is being viewed more as a sentiment catalyst. It is not yet a proven revenue earner, and investors want to see it become one. This explains the muted response in Tesla’s share price to the Roadster’s unveiling.

Tesla Share Price: Key Macro Drivers

1. The Flying Roadster: Good for Sentiment

The Roadster demonstration is seen more as a sentiment catalyst, reinforcing the innovative, brand-positioning narrative that has been the company’s hallmark for years. However, commercial deployment in 2028 will be needed to gauge the product’s impact on the company’s revenues. Other issues remain before this product can become commercially viable: licensing, safety, reliability, and cost will all come into play. Any upside potential will depend on attainment of these critical milestones.

2. Q3 Earnings

Tesla’s Q3 earnings are due for release on 21 October. This is the next major catalyst coming immediately after the Roadster spectacle. Investors will focus on vehicle deliveries, pricing, cash flow, and margins. Other auxiliary headlines include the status of the robotaxi, progress toward fully autonomous vehicles, and any capital-allocation strategies.

3. Commercialization of AI, Autonomy and Robotics

The Roadster demo mostly reinforced the narrative of Tesla as a company built on innovation and engineering prowess. But investors also want to see this move toward commercialization. This matters more for long-term valuation than in the near term. Tesla’s long-term share price will depend on how the company converts its AI, vehicle autonomy, and robotics ambitions into sustainable revenue and profits.

Tesla Share Price: Forecast Scenarios

Bull case: More sustained buying after the Roadster’s unveiling will need to be backed by strong earnings and positive guidance on the rollout of fully autonomous vehicles. These triggers could support a more sustained push toward the $420 resistance target.

Base case: The Roadster unveiling has not led to major stock buying. Tesla’s share price is expected to consolidate between $348 and $365 as investors await evidence of stronger earnings tied to the Roadster’s commercialization.

Bear case: Fading momentum after the Roadster’s unveiling could pressure the current support zone. If more pressure comes from disappointing margins or weaker autonomous vehicle rollout guidance, this could lead to a collapse of the current support, which exposes $313.

Tesla Share Price: Technical Outlook

The support zone at 338.73-348.67 is currently being challenged. A bounce from here with momentum could push for a retest of the 9 October high at 389.01. A successful break of this barrier makes the 419.88 resistance (25 Feb high) available. If this new resistance is uncapped, the 451.63 resistance formed by the 13 May high becomes the new upside target.

Conversely, a breakdown of the support zone unlocks a new downside target at 298.19 (29 July low). However, the 16 June and 20 August lows could form a pivot at 313.98 and act as a pitstop in the downside move.
