Premarket: S&P 500 Futures Pause For Breath After Yesterday Erased 2020 Losses


S&P 500 futures retreat in premarket after yesterday erased all of 2020 losses and investors taking some money off the table. Optimism about the reopening of the economy fades away today after some reports of rising infections in Texas and after the World Health Organization said that the coronavirus pandemic is far from ending.  

The S&P 500 futures give up almost all of yesterday’s gains and are 0.70% lower at 3,205. The Dow Jones futures are 0.80% lower at 27,308, while the Nasdaq futures are 0.40% lower at 9,845. 

European Stocks Drop On Weak Economic Data

European Monetary Union Gross Domestic Product s.a. (GDP) came in at -3.6%, beating the expectations of -3.8% in the first quarter. The yearly GDP reading came in at -3.1% better than forecasts of -3.2%. 

Dax index is 1.58% lower at 12,617 after German exports came down by 31.1% month-on-month for April, the largest drop since 1950, while imports came down by the most since the financial crisis.

The CAC 40 index is 1.40% lower at 5,103. Bank of France now forecasts that the French economy will contract 10.3% in 2020, growing 6.9% in 2021, and 3.9% in 2022. For the second quarter of 2020 sees a contraction of 15% after the 5.3% slump in the first quarter. 

In London the FTSE 100 is 1.09% higher at 6,410, after the UK Halifax House Prices came in at -0.2%, topping the expectations of -0.7% in May. The Halifax House Prices yearly reading came in at 2.6% below the consensus of 2.8%.

Crude Oil Price Under Pressure  

Brent crude oil price trades lower but positive momentum is intact, as investors digest the recent developments in the OPEC oil production cuts. WTI crude oil futures trade 0.36% lower at 38.00 while the Brent crude oil is 0.63% lower at $40.55.  

In Forex, EURUSD retreat from three-month highs but as of writing the pair managed to recover the early European trading session losses and now is 0.02% lower at 1.1290.   

Cryptocurrencies Lower In Muted Session

Bitcoin is 0.41% lower at 9,742, the Litecoin (LTCUSD) trades 0.02% lower at 46.45. Ripple price recovers from morning flash crash, while as of writing is 0.53% lower at 0.2031, while Ethereum (ETHUSD) is 1.14% lower at 244.00.
